Public Relations Coordinator

Boat People SOS, Inc. (BPSOS) was founded in 1980 by and for Vietnamese refugees and immigrants and works to empower, equip, and organize Vietnamese-Americans in their progress toward self-sufficiency. With an annual budget of over $6 million and 12 offices in the US, BPSOS programs address issues related to Health and Mental Health, Family Services, Community Development, and Survivor Services.



The Coordinator is responsible for developing all written materials about BPSOS, helping raise the profile of the organization, and advocating on the organization’s behalf in a variety of media venues.



Salary: Negotiable, depending on experience and qualifications.



Essential Responsibilities:

1. Create educational materials that will mobilize and engage the community, especially Vietnamese Student Associations; our client population; as well as current and potential supporters;

2. Raise BPSOS’ level of credibility by shaping the public perception of BPSOS’ work;

3. Write, edit and coordinate the production of communications including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, media advisories, and press releases;

4. Manage website content;

5. Identify and promote accomplishments through press releases, press events, and articles in professional publications;

6. Ensure positive media coverage;

7. Represent BPSOS at events and conferences;

8. Maintain ongoing awareness of current events relating to issues concerning BPSOS in order to respond to media inquiries



Goal: Increased public awareness of BPSOS.



Requirements:

1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in journalism, advocacy, and/or marketing.

2. Outstanding written, communication, public speaking and interpersonal skills;

3. Able to quickly produce clear, persuasive, well-organized and fact- checked information;

4. Able to handle multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, to quickly rewrite the work of others and to consistently meet deadlines;

5. Able to identify and cultivate key media contacts;

6. Experience working with diverse populations;

7. Ability to take initiative and work under pressure with limited supervision;



Preferences:

1. Proficiency in Vietnamese or another foreign language;

2. Minimum 1-2 years Public Relations experience with a national non-profit;
