The Vietnamese Friendship Association of Seattle is seeking a Member to work with our Family Empowerment Program's after-school program.
Program Description:
The Family Empowerment Program is designed to help low-income Vietnamese youth succeed in school and in life. It has three components: Academic Assistance, Cultural Enrichment, and Parental Involvement and Advocacy:
1. Academic Assistance. Our after-school program helps children do well in school, provides a clear understanding and appreciation for education to younger children, strengthens high school students' civic values and underscores what it means to give back to the community, and teaches youth to manage a group, work as a team, and explore various career path options.
2. Cultural Enrichment. Provides cultural enrichment activities, including cultural events and celebrations in the community, conducting workshops to discuss the differences between American and Vietnamese cultures, or organizing cultural shows or exhibitions at schools to educate the community about Vietnamese culture and tradition
3. Parental Involvement and Advocacy. Provides workshops and events to help parents better understand and become involved in their children's education, serves as connection between parents and schools, and includes monthly individual meetings with parents to discuss issues that affect them.
Major Responsibilities:
The program coordinator will focus on Component 1: Academic Assistance. Responsibilities include:
- Recruiting, managing, and supervising volunteers and tutors for the after-school program
- Developing and implementing strategies for recruiting program participants
- Developing service networks with other organizations or service providers
- Coordinating and implementing program structure and activities, including tutoring, leading workshops
- Organizing and attending community meetings and events
- Assisting in conducting community needs assessments
- Creating surveys and other tools to evaluate effectiveness of existing programs
- Writing and presenting program reports
- Writing grants to support program
Location: New Holly Learning Center. 7058 32nd Ave S., Seattle, WA 98118. Close to Phuoc Loc Tho.
Qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills
- Is organized and highly flexible
- Can effectively work independently and as a team member
- Has experience working with diverse populations
- Proficiency in basic computer technology skills (Word, Excel, email, Internet navigation)
- General office/clerical skills
- Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
- Must be at least 18 years old
Commitment:
- Service Term: Full time (1700 service hours in 11 months)
- Project Start Date: October 1, 2008 to Nov 7th, 2008
- Project End Date: 11 months after start date
- Work Hours: To be determined with supervisor. Will include Monday to Thursday 2 to 5pm and some evenings and weekends.

Additional Qualifications:
- Vietnamese bilingual/bicultural, familiarity with the Vietnamese community peferred
- An interest and commitment to providing service to the community
- Has a commitment to social justice and community organizing
- Is reliable and have strong work ethics (full understanding of confidentiality)
- Is comfortable speaking in front of groups
- Is comfortable with group facilitation
- Can maintain accurate information and has solid attention to detail
- Can inspire and motivate others while supervising
- Valid driver's license required, with own transportation preferable
- Some evening and weekend work
