New direction

So it's been an incredibly busy time for me. For about a month now, I've been running nonstop. Our union campaign at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara went public, and I'm going to start posting stories of our workers to share why we want our hotel to be Union and how the hotel has started a ruthless campaign of intimidation and deception, all courtesy of the corporate office's decision to keep their workers "in line."

The first story is one that I use often, because it shows how low the hotel managers think of us. There is a housekeeper whose normal duties are to clean rooms. However, there were several injuries in the laundry that left the department severely understaffed. They asked her if she would be willing to work in the laundry for awhile and she happily agreed. When she got her next paycheck though, she noticed that her hourly salary had been dropped a dollar.

This housekeeper confronted her manager, demanding to know why her salary had been lowered. The manager's response was that the housekeeper worked in a different classification now; laundry attendants make less than room attendants. The housekeeper was livid and went to HR to resolve the issue. The HR Director told her simply "you agreed to it." This housekeeper was angry, and she made it clear that had she known her hourly was going to drop a dollar, she never would've accepted.

Ever since our Union campaign went public though, the HR Director and her manager apologized to this housekeeper. They restored her salary, as well as paid her back for every hour that she worked at the lower salary rate. To try to cover their backs, they accused each other of misunderstandings, which is ridiculous because this Housekeeper approached both. That's RESPECT.

In other news, I will be leaving for Portland on Monday! If you don't know why, you better click here. I am uber excited for this trip because with all the craziness of the past month, I need a break in my extremely busy routine. I better see yall there!
